Days 1-3
Washington, DC
A visit to Washington, DC must include a visit to the National Mall, home to many of the magnificent (and free of charge) museums of the Smithsonian Institution.  Be certain to visit beautiful Union Station, the departure point for tours of the monuments including walking, tour bus, bicycle, and segway tours.  On weekends sample fresh produce at the colourful farmer’s market at Dupont Circle or Eastern Market on Capitol Hill.  Go undercover at the International Spy Museum, where you can crack codes, take on covers and invent your own covert operation.  Animal lovers may wish to pay a visit to the National Zoo, home to giant pandas, cheetahs, tigers and other exotic species. DC's theatre scene is rich and varied. The Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage offers free performances at 6:30 pm nightly. Other theatres, such as the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Arena Stage, Warner Theatre and National Theatre regularly present familiar classics. For something a bit more contemporary, catch a show at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company or Studio Theatre.  In nearby Fairfax, Virginia is the only National Park dedicated to the performing arts, Wolf Trap Center.

Skyline Drive / Front Royal, VA (70 mi/ 112 km)
You will find the entrance to Shenandoah National Park via the famous Skyline Drive. Other attractions for outdoor enthusiasts include the nearby George Washington National Forest.  Visitors can enjoy canoeing and kayaking on the Shenandoah Valley River and visit the numerous Civil War attractions in the region, such as the Warren Rifles Confederate Museum. In nearby Winchester, the spectacular museum on the Shenandoah Valley tells the story of the art, history and culture of the great valley for which it is named.

Williamsburg is home to the largest living history museum in the country, Colonial Williamsburg.  Interact with costumed interpreters to discover how colonial Americans worked, learned and played.  Treat yourself to colonial fare such as fried green tomatoes, peanut soup, Virginia ham and seafood at one of Colonial Williamsburg’s taverns.  For modern shopping and dining spend some time at Merchants Square adjacent to Colonial Williamsburg.   Busch Gardens theme park combines 17th-century charm with 21st-century thrills, boasting more than 50 rides and attractions and several live stage shows.  Finding bargains is a breeze at Prime Outlets Williamsburg.

Conclude your Capital Region experience in Annapolis, MD.  Watch beautiful yachts come and go at Annapolis City Dock, referred to as "Ego Alley", stop at the Information Booth to learn about boat and walking tours and pick up a map. Take a tour of the US Naval Academy or take a historic city or ghost tour.  Chick and Ruth’s Deli is famous for its breakfast – when patrons are invited to sing the Pledge of Allegiance each morning.
